Families awaiting home reconstruction receive keys to 19 apartments in Sunja

(Hina) - Croatian officials on Thursday handed over the keys to 19 newly built apartments in Sunja to families who will use them as temporary accommodation until the reconstruction of their earthquake-damaged homes is completed, expected by the end of next year.

Once the beneficiaries move into their rebuilt houses, the apartments will become part of the government's affordable housing programme.

The keys were presented by Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets Branko Bačić and Sisak-Moslavina County Prefect Ivan Celjak.

Bačić thanked residents for their patience, saying this morning's earthquake had confirmed the quality of the reconstruction, as damaged buildings were being rebuilt to modern seismic standards rather than restored to their previous condition.

The apartment building was constructed under the government's housing programme implemented by the state-owned Real Estate Agency (APN). The €3.3 million project was financed from the state budget. Residents will not pay rent during their temporary stay, while utility costs will be subsidised.

The government plans to build 59 apartment buildings with 1,024 housing units in Sisak-Moslavina County under various programmes. So far, 57 buildings with 986 apartments have been completed, with two more planned in Sisak.
