Hina - The Croatian government on Wednesday donated a property in Ervenik, near Knin, for the construction of a Čengić Family Memorial Home, honouring the victims of a brutal 1992 war crime, fulfilling a promise made in 2020.

Minister of Veterans' Affairs Tomo Medved said the Memorial Home will serve as a permanent tribute to the family, who were murdered by Serb paramilitaries, and will be funded by the Ministry. A commemorative plaque was placed at the site in 2007.

The four-member Čengić family-- father Drago, mother Nevenka, and their sons Slobodan and Goran, aged just 11 and five -- were brutally murdered on 18 January 1992 in their home in the hamlet of Šašići near Ervenik, close to Knin.

The Ministry of Veterans' Affairs, following a proposal from the Croatian Homeland War Volunteers Association (UHDDR), obtained the necessary permits for converting the family home into a public memorial, with the 178 square metre property valued at €1,610. Construction Minister Branko Bačić noted that the Memorial Home will be a lasting symbol of remembrance and respect for all war victims.

The access road will be upgraded by the Šibenik-Knin County Roads Authority, with €268,847 including VAT allocated for the upgrade and transfer to the Municipality of Ervenik.

Separately, the government continued settling property disputes with the City of Zagreb, transferring €4.8 million worth of property for kindergartens, a school and care homes, and compensating the remaining €547,210 with additional state-owned property.

It approved €10.3 million in 2026 funding for Mostar University Hospital in Bosnia and Herzegovina to cover outstanding medical supplier debts.

The government also agreed to sponsor a charity concert by the Anamarija Carević Foundation in memory of the 15-year-old victim of the 2020 Zagreb earthquake. Proceeds will support the restoration of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and construction of a community centre in Anamarija's name.
