2CroCEE: Second edition of the Croatian Conference on Earthquake Engineering

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the Zagreb earthquake, the second edition of the Croatian Conference on Earthquake Engineering – 2CroCEE, organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Zagreb, was held at the Westin Hotel in Zagreb.

The opening ceremony of the conference, gathered, among many participants, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets Branko Bačić, the Minister of Culture and Media dr. sc. Nina Obuljen Koržinek, the Deputy Mayor of the City of Zagreb Luka Korlaet, prof. Ph. D. Stjepan Lakušić, rector of the University of Zagreb, Nina Dražin Lovrec, president of the Croatian Chamber of Civil Engineers, and Rada Vacareanu and Mihaela Zamolo, representatives of the European and Croatian Association for Earthquake Engineering.

"The conference is an extremely important scientific-expert gathering that contributes to social awareness of the importance of earthquake engineering, as well as the exchange of international scientific and operational experiences in preventive earthquake-resistant construction of buildings and post-earthquake reconstruction," emphasized the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bačić in his speech and added: "Croatia is aware, more than ever, of the need to implement safe and anti-earthquake reconstruction of buildings in order to make them safer and more comfortable for the lives of our fellow citizens, and to prevent the consequences of possible earthquakes in the future."

A three-day programme of the 2CroCEE conference gathered experts from 26 countries and around 500 participants. Moreover, it included technical visits to earthquake-damaged buildings and construction sites of the buildings that are being renovated in Zagreb, as well as to the earthquake-affected area of Sisak - Moslavina County.

The conference programme was divided into 10 thematic sections in the field of earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, and included lectures by top international and domestic researchers, which covered various topics, such as assessments of the behavior of historic masonry buildings during an earthquake, the reconstruction of the Zagreb Cathedral and buildings after the earthquake in Italy, as well as experience exchange of centers of excellence in the field of earthquake engineering in the region, and many others.

The CroCEE conference emerged as a response to the need for reconstruction after the earthquakes that struck Croatia, and is extremely important in terms of raising the level of knowledge and awareness of earthquake risks and connecting experts from all over the world. The first conference of this type, called "SHAKE ZAGREB WITH KNOWLEDGE", was held in 2021 on the first anniversary of the Zagreb earthquake.
