Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets Minister Branko Bačić said on Tuesday that post-earthquake reconstruction, considering the capacities of the Croatian construction sector, was objectively progressing at an appropriate pace.
It is difficult to exceed the current pace because we have annulled numerous public procurement processes for multi-residential buildings and replacement family houses, as the prices we received were unacceptable, being significantly above the projected and bid prices, Bačić said after a government delegation toured several public, multi-residential buildings and replacement houses undergoing reconstruction in Zagreb.
Among other locations, the delegation, which included Science and Education Minister Radovan Fuchs, visited the building of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Geodesy, whose reconstruction cost €41 million and is nearing completion.
In the City of Zagreb, 3,300 locations have been reconstructed and work is ongoing at nearly 600 construction sites, he said.
These are generally complex and expensive seismic retrofitting works, which now dominate Zagreb's reconstruction efforts, Bačić added.
In the City of Zagreb, it was necessary to build 90 replacement family houses after the earthquake. So far, 80 have either been completed, are under construction, or are in the procurement process, he said, adding that for the remaining ten replacement family houses, decisions on reconstruction are expected in the coming days, after which contractors will be sought.
Reconstruction related to replacement family houses for the Zagreb and Petrinja earthquakes will be completed by mid-2027, Bačić said.
A total of €3.3 billion has been invested in reconstruction following the Zagreb and Petrinja earthquakes in 2020, of which €1.9 billion has been allocated for the reconstruction of damaged buildings in the Zagreb area.
