Minister Bačić: Reconstruction of public buildings to be completed early next year

(Hina) - Croatia's Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets Branko Bačić said on Friday that post-earthquake reconstruction of public buildings was nearing completion and should be fully finished by early 2027, including projects funded through the EU Solidarity Fund.

Speaking at a government session, Bačić said 15,276 sites, covering nearly 58,000 residential units, had been reconstructed by 4 September, alongside a significant number of new replacement family homes.

There are currently 1,692 active construction sites, mainly family homes and apartment buildings, while reconstruction of public buildings is gradually winding down.

Works are also being procured for a further 1,285 sites comprising 4,191 residential units, most of them family homes.

Bačić said the government was increasingly focusing on block-by-block reconstruction, particularly in central Zagreb and Sisak, to avoid repeated road closures and overlapping construction projects.

Two blocks have been completed, seven are under construction and nine are in procurement. This will bring us close to completing all apartment buildings affected by the Zagreb and Petrinja earthquakes, Bačić said, citing the Kuković House in Zagreb, with 75 residential units, as an example.

A total of €5.12 billion has so far been invested in reconstructing public and private property: €3.06 billion following the Zagreb earthquake and €2.06 billion following the Petrinja earthquake.

This will be the last year in which significant funds will be allocated from the state budget. We have planned €1.02 billion for reconstruction this year, Bačić said.
