(Hina) - Earthquake victims on Tuesday witnessed two important events - the removal of the remaining housing containers from a container settlement in Glina and the completion of the last of 74 prefabricated wooden homes in that town in the region of Banija, struck by an earthquake in December 2020.
Construction Minister Branko Bačić, who was in Glina today, said that the new settlement of highly energy-efficient homes in Glina testified to the scale of construction work in Banija, notably of public buildings in the area of Sisak.
"Three apartment buildings are being built here as well and they are financed with money from the Competitiveness and Cohesion Operational Programme. These buildings will primarily serve for temporary accommodation, and later they will be used as retirement homes," he said.
He noted that nine of 11 container settlements have been vacated so far.
Fourteen replacement homes have been built in Glina, and around 30 are under construction, with the seismic retrofitting of private houses having begun as well.
Bačić said that the reconstruction model under which property owners reconstruct their homes on their own is very well accepted, with 200 bank accounts having been opened so far into which around €15 million has been paid so that citizens can renovate their homes on their own.
He reiterated that problems regarding public procurement persist due to lack of building contractors.
Sisak-Moslavina County head Ivan Celjak said that in addition to the settlement with 74 houses in Glina, a settlement with 57 houses in Petrinja was being developed and that its tenants would be able to move in by the end of October.
He added that about 30 houses would be built in Sisak.
Glina Mayor Ivan Janković said that all projects financed by the EU Solidarity Fund had been completed, and that work was currently under way on seven buildings.
He said that it had been agreed for the state and the county to financially help with larger projects in Glina, such as the central town square, the sports centre, the bus station, etc.
