The fire in the Vjesnik skyscraper still has not been extinguished, Commander of the Public Fire Brigade (JVP) of the City of Zagreb Siniša Jembrih said on Wednesday morning, stating that firefighters are not extinguishing it because, as decided by structural engineers, it is not safe to enter the building for now.
“It is quiet, we are minimally present there, now we are helping structural engineers and we are monitoring the building using drones,” Commander of JVP of the City of Zagreb Siniša Jembrih said to Hina.
In accordance with the decision of structural engineers, firefighters left the Vjesnik skyscraper on Tuesday night for safety reasons. The decision was made to wait for the object to cool down by the morning so they could continue extinguishing the fire, but to stay on the site through the night.
As of last night, special traffic regulations apply. The underpass of Slavonska avenija beneath Savska is closed off in both directions, westbound traffic on Slavonska avenija is routed through the overhead roadway across the intersection with Savska cesta, eastbound traffic on Slavonska avenija is closed off from Selska cesta to Marohnićeva ulica. Traffic is redirected to Selska before the overpass. Savka cesta, Odranska ulica and Cvjetna cesta remain open to traffic in both directions.
Yesterday the City Administration stated that due to the importance of Slavonska avenija for the overall Zagreb’s traffic system, larger disruptions in the wider traffic network are expected. Therefore, the operation of traffic lights in the broader area has been adjusted to increase flow at intersections, and traffic wardens and police officers are also present on the ground.
Citizens have been asked to use public transport and bicycles, and those who still need to travel by car are encouraged to use navigation applications to help them find the best possible route.
The fire in the Vjesnik skyscraper on the corner of Slavonska avenija and Savska cesta started on Monday night around 11 p.m. As it spread vertically, it engulfed several floors and the roof, and experts should soon decide on the future of one of the symbols of Zagreb.
