Construction begins on 20-home subsidised housing project in Buje

Hina - Construction has begun on a 20-apartment subsidised housing development in Buje, with Minister Branko Bačić saying on Monday that Istria leads Croatia in state-backed housing after completing 505 of the 9,100 homes built under the POS programme over the past 24 years.

Bačić laid the foundation stone for the project, which will be built by Vladimir Gortan under a contract worth €2.1 million excluding VAT, or about €2.7 million including VAT. Construction is due to be completed within a year.

The apartments will be sold at €2,104 per square metre. The Town of Buje drew up its priority list for the 20 flats in January 2024 from 43 applicants.

Bačić said housing is one of the basic prerequisites for young people to build their future, adding that projects such as this help citizens resolve one of their most important life issues.

He said a further 500 homes are currently under construction across Croatia through the APN state housing agency. Once those projects are completed, the government plans to phase out the POS programme and focus instead on affordable housing developments, which he said would further reduce the cost of buying a home.

Referring to a recent meeting with Istrian mayors and municipal heads, Bačić said the planned Affordable Housing Act envisages close cooperation between the state, counties and local authorities.

He added that 19 local government units have already expressed interest in joining the affordable housing scheme and submitted proposals aimed at making home ownership and rental more accessible.

Also attending the ceremony were APN director Dragan Hristov and Buje Mayor Fabrizio Vižintin.
