Hina – A contract for the allocation of European Union grant funds to co-finance the construction of the Perna ferry terminal, valued at €19.9 million, was signed on Monday in Orebić, on the southern Pelješac peninsula.

The project involves the construction of a quay for the ferry terminal, featuring a central pier of 90.18 metres in length, a quay for docking vessels, and a small eastern pier of 14.15 metres, along with the development of the adjacent shoreline for ferry passenger and vehicle traffic.

The construction is expected to take two years.

The contract was signed at the Maritime Museum in Orebić by Minister for the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković, Director of the Central Finance and Contracting Agency Dragan Jelić, and Director of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Port Authority Antun Banovac.

Minister Butković said that the project is very important for Orebić, Korčula island and Dubrovnik-Neretva County, which, with more than €300 million, leads in the number of completed and signed projects for investments in port infrastructure.

"The construction of the Perna Port and the Orebić bypass, for which we will soon select a contractor, will mark a new chapter in the lives of the people of this municipality. There will no longer be summer traffic jams in the town centre, as the port will be relocated. Following this contract, the Port Authority will announce a tender for the construction works, and I expect that construction of both the port and the bypass will begin this autumn," Butković stated.

Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets Branko Bačić said that the project is crucial for Orebić, but even more so for the transport connection with Korčula island.

"More than fifty years after the construction of the Dominče ferry port on Korčula, we have been waiting for the construction of a port on Pelješac. The construction of the Perna Port and the Orebić bypass will contribute to the development of both Pelješac and Korčula, and our goal is also to complete the fast road from the Pelješac Bridge and the Brijesta junction to the Orebić bypass and Perna Port. The study documentation for that section of the Pelješac road is currently being prepared," said Bačić.
