Today State Secretary Tonči Glavinić attended the ceremonial start of classes at the renovated Galdovo Primary School, together with Minister of Science, Education and Youth Radovan Fuchs, Mayor of Sisak Domagoj Orlić, Deputy Sisak-Moslavina County Prefect Mihael Jurić and Principal Josip Tominac.

The reconstruction of the school, damaged by the earthquake, symbolises an important step in the return of pupils to their school premises after attending classes elsewhere. The total value of the investment is 17.88 million euro, and its realisation was financed through the EU Solidarity Fund, NRRP, the state and city budget.

“Today we open a space of knowledge, safety and new beginnings. Sisak and Banovina have gone through a difficult period. The earthquakes have left deep marks, not only on buildings, but in people’s lives. This is precisely why days like these are particularly important. They are proof that reconstruction is not merely a technical or financial process; it is a gesture of trust in the future and people who live here. Today marks the symbolic end of the construction and technical part of the reconstruction of the school, which we now hand to teachers and pupils to fill with learning and knowledge,” State Secretary Glavinić pointed out, adding that, from the beginning of reconstruction in the Zagreb and Petrinja earthquake areas, the state has invested a total of 4.23 billion euro reflected in thousands of reconstructed homes, schools, hospitals and public buildings. He also recalled that the reconstruction has been completed at 14,336 locations, that nearly 500 houses have been built and nearly 2,000 construction sites opened, which still demonstrates the scope and reach of the reconstruction process. The 2026 state budget allocates additional 1.02 billion euro for earthquake reconstruction.

“Today is an extremely important and joyful day for Galdovo, and the whole of Sisak as well. After five years of uncertainty, our pupils and teachers have finally returned to their school. On my first day as mayor, I clearly stated that children and education are our top priority, and we have done everything to open the Galdovo education complex as soon as possible. This is not just a building; it is a symbol of reconstruction, perseverance and care for the future of our city,” Mayor Orlić said.

The reconstructed school comprises 19 classrooms, a sports hall, a library and outer area, which all allows for single-shift classes. It is located in a modern educational complex of stimulating environment. The space is envisaged to provide children with good-quality education and to encourage the development of creativity, safety and togetherness. The project also includes a newly built and equipped local kindergarten and nursery for over a hundred children. The new education complex is envisaged as a place where education begins at the earliest age and supports children through key formative years.
