Hina - The Croatian government has approved just over €650,000 for the reconstruction of family homes and buildings in the town of Slunj and the municipality of Rakovica, which were damaged by a 3.8-magnitude earthquake in May last year.

Of the total amount, €63,000 has been allocated to Slunj, while €591,000 will go to Rakovica, as they are unable to fund the reconstruction independently, prompting government intervention.

The 1 May 2024 earthquake, which shook parts of Karlovac County but largely went unnoticed by the wider public, caused damage to 63 privately owned buildings—including seven family homes and one residential block in Slunj, and 54 family homes and one residential building in Rakovica.

Six of these buildings sustained significant structural damage, requiring extensive reconstruction, while the remaining 57 suffered minor damage.

Reconstruction work on some properties is already underway, and the government will disburse the financial aid directly to the town and municipality, explained Minister of Construction Branko Bačić.

In its official decision, the government emphasised that the allocated funds are strictly for the reconstruction of family homes and residential buildings, excluding public and commercial buildings.
