During early July in London, as part of the London Climate Action Week 2019, “Building a better and more sustainable future for cities” conference was held, organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

A very successful green cities financing program worth 950 million euros was presented as ‘EBRD Green Cities’. The conference showcased how to deal with climate change issues and other urban challenges and how to ensure a better and sustainable future for cities and its residents. It emphasized innovation for green cities, focusing on innovative technologies, more stakeholder involvement and new sources of financing.

The conference brought together representatives from cities, financial institutions and experts in the field of climate and urbanization. Considering a wide range of stakeholders involved, participants had a chance to network and share experiences in creating and investing in sustainable cities. Representatives from Croatia Ines Androić Brajčić, Head of Sector at Ministry of Construction and Physical Planning and Vojko Obersnel, mayor of Rijeka shared their experience in planning and implementing sustainable development goals in urban areas.

Ministry regularly participates in constructing the National Development Strategy 2030, a key strategic document for Croatia, and as part of the Green Croatia development goal, making it the fundamental document in preparing Croatia for the new multiannual financial framework. As an extension of energy efficiency in buildings, Ministry is suggesting new activities encompassing the development of green infrastructure in urban areas and applying the principles of circular economy in space and buildings, giving a new dimension to urban development. The conference was a platform for future actions which will have real effects on improving the lives of residents.
