Minister Bačić hands over keys to temporary housing units in Sisak
Hina - People still awaiting the reconstruction of their homes after the December 2020 devastating earthquake in Sisak-Moslavina County on Thursday moved into flats in two newly built residential buildings in Sisak, with Construction and State Assets Minister Branko Bačić attending the event.
The two apartment buildings, located in the Zeleni Brijeg neighbourhood of Sisak, each contain 19 units, ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom apartments, with an area of between 35 and 90 square metres. The investment, funded from the state budget, is valued at €5.7 million. The apartments will be used as temporary housing free of rent, with subsidised utility costs, for citizens whose homes were damaged in the 2020 earthquake. Later on, the units will be repurposed for housing families in need and for staff accommodation.
Twelve such residential buildings have already been built in Sisak, Minister Bačić said at the event, at which he handed over keys to temporary housing units.
He explained that in Sisak and Sisak-Moslavina County, instead of traditional reconstruction, a new model was introduced to help revitalise the region. Once reconstruction is complete, he emphasised, the buildings will provide affordable housing for young families.
By June next year, a total of 20 residential buildings and two state-subsidised (POS) buildings are planned in Sisak, which means the city will have 410 more apartments than it did before the earthquake.
Bačić acknowledged that the reconstruction process has been challenging, but said that it has now reached the desired pace. He expressed hope that the residents provided with temporary accommodation will see their homes rebuilt soon.
He also noted that €4 billion has already been spent on reconstruction efforts in Zagreb and in Petrinja, in Sisak-Moslavina County, affected by the 2020 earthquakes.
In total, 59 new residential buildings with 1,024 apartments will be built in Sisak-Moslavina County by the end of the reconstruction process, which is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026.
