Works on Institute of Pediatric Haematology at KBC Zagreb hospital launched

(Hina) - Works were inaugurated at the KBC Zagreb hospital on Monday to expand the Institute of Pediatric Haematology, Oncology and Transplantation of Blood-forming Stem Cells, which should open next May.

The institute will spread over 2,500 square metres, instead of the current 700, the hospital's director Ante Ćorušić said at the inauguration of the works while presenting Phase III of the KBC Zagreb Development Project, which costs €153.9 million and envisages the construction of a new six-floor multi-functional building by mid-2026, among other things.

Investments worth €377 million have been secured for the hospital between 2016 and 2026, he said, adding that they come from EU funds, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), the EU Solidarity Fund, the state budget, a World Bank loan, and private and corporate donations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said, "€377 million is a huge amount, distributed on buildings and top equipment for the hospital. It's a clear message that we want higher quality for Croatian healthcare."

Construction Minister Branko Bačić said "we are witnessing a historic reconstruction and construction of the health infrastructure, unprecedented in Zagreb's history."

We will finance the equipment for the new hospital, in the amount of €19.9 million, from the NRRP and the deadline for utilising the funds is the end of Q2 2026, he said, adding that he expects a building permit in December and construction works to begin next spring.

These large infrastructure investments will be accompanied by organisational and financial changes in the functioning of the health system, said Health Minister Vili Beroš.

Also present at the ceremony were representatives of the World Bank and Deputy Parliament Speaker Željko Reiner.
