The Physical Planning Act (Official Gazette 153/13 and 65/17) stipulates that for the area of a national park the spatial plan of an area with special features shall be adopted, and that the spatial plan of the national park is a state level spatial plan.
In order to protect this unique space and to ensure its sustainable use, Amendments to the Spatial plan of Plitvice Lakes National Park are prepared and adopted for the entire area of the national park with its overall surface area of 266 km2. In parallel with the preparation of the Amendments to the Spatial plan of Plitvice Lakes National Park, the procedure of Strategic Environmental Assessment with the Main Assessment of acceptability for the ecological network shall be carried out, pursuant to the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act and Nature Protection Act.
In line with the recommendations and requirements stated in the Decision of the World Heritage Committee 41 COM 7B.3, the recommendations of the WHC and IUCN mission of March 2017, as well as the Action plan for improvement of the conservation status of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, and in view of the Park's unquestionable significance for the identity of Croatian space and the awareness of the increasing interest in visits and use of the Park, the adoption of Amendments to the Plan shall ensure additional preconditions for preserving the value of the Park area and for its sustainable use.
