Reconstruction of Zagreb Cathedral and religious buildings under way
(Hina) - Construction Minister Branko Bačić and Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Koržinek on Wednesday visited the Church and Monastery of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Zagreb Cathedral and the Archbishop's Residence, which are undergoing structural reconstruction following the earthquake of three years ago.
Bačić said that these buildings were part of the architectural heritage of the Croatian people, while Obuljen Koržinek noted that these were among the largest construction sites in the city and that they were being reconstructed with funding from the EU Solidarity Fund through the Ministry of Culture and Media. In Zagreb alone, the Ministry of Culture and Media is renovating 117 cultural and religious buildings, and the value of their structural reconstruction is about €400 million. The Cathedral, Archbishop's Residence and Franciscan Monastery are among the largest projects and will absorb €65 million.
Right now, this is one of the most complex structural reconstruction projects not just in Croatia, but in the world, Obuljen Koržinek said, adding that additional funding will be ensured after 30 June.
Zagreb Archbishop Dražen Kutleša thanked Bačić and Obuljen Koržinek for their efforts regarding the reconstruction of the buildings concerned. These buildings were built more than a hundred years ago, they have both religious and cultural purposes and serve the general good, he said.
